Cherry Blossom Ten Miler
It was a GORGEOUS day in a beautiful setting. The course started and finished at the Washington Monument. It went over the Memorial Bridge and back, then down Rock Creek in front of the Kennedy Center, and back. It snaked up Independence Ave and around the Tidal basin before turning off and going down East Potomac park. I would love to run out there all the time. It was so beautiful!

It was also incredibly crowded. Considering they did a lottery, I can't even imagine what it would be like if everyone who tried to get in had gotten in. O_O There were times when I was running on the sidewalks or the median to pass people. Running on the median on Rock Creek was similar to passing on a busy country road. There were people running both directions, because the course went down past the Kennedy Center and doubled back. There were other people on the median trying to pass people, and that traffic was two ways as well. It was kind of insane. I was super careful, but still kind of lucky I didn't trip on something.

I like to keep track of little things in my head, snapshots of moments in time while I'm running. Sometimes I remember to jot them down later, sometimes not.

Mile One: VNV Nation: Homeward Bound. Somewhat prematurely appearing in the random order. This song has a habit of showing up near the end of my runs usually. ;)

Mile Three: The GPS in my phone was incredibly faily. It was working up until this point, and then it suddenly told me I had run 70 miles. I'm pretty sure I didn't.

Mile Five: Shiny Toy Guns: Major Tom. Mandy gave me a Vanilla Gu to try out and I had just downed it and was hauling serious ass. The course started to slant slightly downward in a really nice way, and I felt AWESOME. Drifting, falling, floating, weightless, calling, calling home.

Mile Nine: I think. I never saw the Mile 9 sign. But I knew I was close because I came around the corner and there was the monument, and there were people everywhere, cheering. And then there was a big hill in front of me, and I sprinted it. I picked someone up in front of me that I wanted to pass, and I went for it. I don't know if I actually passed them, but I crossed that finish line feeling proud.

It was definitely not my best race.

I have a number of issues plaguing me: a healing sprained ankle, a dumb head cold and on top of those, I got down there late and the lines at the porta-johns were AWFUL. I really needed to go, but there I was in line when they said my wave was starting in 90 seconds, so I said forget it and bailed for the starting line.

I made it to the end ok, but yeah, let's just say when I crossed the finish line, I kept running...straight for a bathroom :)

It was a good race. I felt good. I still feel good. I've been letting up a bit since the Half-Marathon because of my left foot being weak and I was concerned I wasn't going to finish this thing, honestly. But I did really well and I'm proud.

The funny thing about head colds, is you think its going to be AWFUL to run through, but something about the endorphin rush makes it just go away. I've run on many occasion with a stuffed up head and it disappears until the end. I was so sick in Jamaica that as soon as I stopped running, I sneezed like four times and was totally congested again. ;)

It wasn't that bad this time. I definitely woke up feeling really congested and kind of awful this morning though. Also, back to bosu therapy for my left foot. Someday it will heal!

Next week is the George Washington Parkway Classic! Luckily Pacers owns this event and their setup for pickup is awesome! I already went to one of their stores to pickup my bib and packet and its a week out! I love not having to worry about that the day before a race!

Its going to be a gorgeous race, it starts at Mt Vernon and ends in Old Town Alexandria! Course Map

Its funny, I wanted to do this event last year, only I was trying to do the 5K, but I couldn't because it was during my annual trip home to Albuquerque. When I went to pick up my packet and she handed me the Ten Mile bib, I had a moment where I realized how far I've come.

From 5k to Ten Miles, and beyond. Its kind of amazing.

Bringing it back!!
I was informed by one Miss [info]raveness9mm that I have been missed and need to be updating this darn thing!

Sorry folks! Life, it gets away from you, you know?

For example, I just took my Christmas tree down. Last night. Yes, yes it IS March.

So, for catch up time, let's talk about my greatest accomplishment so far this year!

The New Orleans Mardi Gras Rock n Roll Half-Marathon!!!

image

I finished the race at 09:14:14, with a time of 02:02:16. I was shooting for under 2:00, but honestly I did my training run in 2:09 so I was actually expecting to do way worse.

Aim for the stars, but be happy with the mountain tops. ;)

So so proud of myself. For so many reasons!

Further thoughts from my fitness blog.

Well, I am clearly not downtown running the Marine Corps 10k.

Last week I got tangled up with Felix while drilling takedowns, and pretty well damaged my foot. I thought my toe was broken it hurt so bad. Upon doctor inspection and Xray, it turned out to be merely sprained, so I was going to try to run anyhow.

Until I tried to go downtown yesterday. Step one was supposed to be to go get my race packet. Step two was supposed to be the Rally to Restore Sanity.

Neither happened because we stood on the Metro platform with about 300 other individuals waiting on a train that wasn't already jam packed. It never came.

We could have eventually gotten on, but I needed to be back to Operation Octagon at 3 pm to support my teammates, three of whom were fighting. We would've gotten downtown and gotten packed into the mall for like an hour and then we would've had to turn right around and come back.

So I stood there on the platform with tears in my eyes trying to decide between my own running (which would be somewhat compromised by the injury..more than somewhat, probably) and martial arts. Or, rather my teammates, because clearly I was not actually fighting, and never will be...at least not in striking tournaments. Mark specifically asked that I not do it, and I said I wouldn't. So, I can't and won't go back on that.

Its funny how conflicted I was. The running started as a way to get into better shape to be able to move better and train harder and longer. Now, with the half marathon registration and the commitment I've made to fundraising, I obviously need to be training hard for that and so the importance of both is starting to equalize.

The fact that I'm injured and probably shouldn't be attempting to run 6.2 miles on a pretty painful injury definitely played into it, but when it came down to it, I wanted to go see and support my teammates. I've been training with these guys for the better part of a year now, and Kristin is one of my personal heroes.

The running I can get back. The chance to be there for Felix's first fight and Eric's first title attempt and Kristin's first cage match, I would never get back.

It sucks that I missed the rally, but according to a friend who went, I probably saw and heard more on my TV than he and a lot of the people who went did.

The fights, by the way, did not go the way we had hoped. But my teammates showed heart and determination and absolutely stood in the fire, toe to toe with some really tough, huge and well trained opponents and came out with heads held high. I'm so proud of them. It was worth it, and I do believe I made the right decision.

I just wish I was downtown finishing right now. That's all.

Random Bullet Points!!
- Caught up on Dexter, finally! Awesome. And I still love the relationship between Dexter and Debra. I'm digging the new season so far, interesting new elements ...without spoiling. :)

- Caught up on Supernatural. The only reason my husband tolerates my viewing of this show is one Mister Bobby Singer. He lol'd along with me for the whole last episode.

- Back to training after my vacation month. Ok, it wasn't a month, it was a week of vacation, a week back here and then a week of vacation. I did some lifting and running while on vacay but there is really nothing like a six day on one day off onslaught to make you feel it. Back to 145, thank goodness. Was in the dangerzone pushing toward 150 again, and I have made a personal vow some time ago that I WILL NEVER BE OVER 150 again. Working toward 135 still.

- I have a race on Halloween. I'm signed up to run the Marine Corps 10k. Its the last 6.2 mi of the Marine Corps Marathon. I'm excited. I'm going to wear a running skirt (and probably tights if the weather holds) and a batgirl shirt. :D No cape because I don't want my fellow runners to, I don't know KILL me.

- My last long run was 8 miles. I'm sticking with 8 for this week too, because I don't want to push it and get injured before the race. After that I'm going to start pushing it up. New Orleans is still four months away, but I want to get as much outdoor distance as I can get before the weather really sets in. Hoping for a late snow season this year. ;)

- Speaking of New Orleans. If anyone wants to donate, here's the link/info for the GTFO Cancer fund.

DetermiNation

(I don't want to talk about how I had to rewrite their code to get that to post right...)

In case you missed the news, the main reason that I have committed to run for the DetermiNation program, which carries a $1300 fund raising committment, is because my best friend has been diagnosed with cervical cancer. She has had one surgery which was mostly exploratory and for biopsies and she is recovering from that. Once they get the biopsies back they will either proceed with chemo or with a radical hysterectomy. Either way, she's facing a hard road ahead and dammit, I'm just DONE with cancer. It took my brother, it threatens my friends and I don't understand how we can go to the moon and build robots and yet we can't beat this disease.
Please consider making a donation if you've got the funds to spare. The race isn't until February 13, so if you want to wait until next calendar year for a new tax write off, that's totally cool too. ;)

- Getting ready for Halloween and having a great time of it. I love this season so much! Tonight we're going to the Caps game and then over to the Silver Spring Zombie Crawl after party. So clearly we need to go dressed as zombies. So I'm going to be a Caps Zombie Cheerleader. Hee. If you're watching the game, look for me! :D

Also, I have a spectacular viking costume that I'm putting together. Its pretty much done but for small details. Pretty excited!

- Definitely going to the Rally to Restore Sanity on the 30th. Leaving early though, as two of my teammates are fighting Muay Thai in Operation Octagon, and the fights start at 3. One of my other teammates is fighting MMA later that night.

Going to be a busy Halloween weekend!

Friday is the party. Saturday morning we're volunteering at the Making Strides against Breast Cancer walk in DC in the AOL tent. We're handing out free stuff all morning. Then we're heading over to the rally. And hoping to find food somewhere. :) And then we leave at 2 and bust ass up to Sterling for the fights.
Sunday is the race and a lot of relaxing. :D Maybe I'll finally force myself to take some time and use that free massage card I got for running the AOL 5k earlier. :D

I did the Race for the Cure in ABQ at Isotopes Park with my mom and my best friend and her daughter!

It was awesome! We did a great job!

Here's one more, as I was crossing the finish!

I finished in 26:33 (gun time) which was very close to my personal best, and ABQ is 5000 feet, so it was quite an accomplishment!

Then I turned around and ran back and found my peeps and we walked the rest of the way together! We had a great time for a great cause! :D Please do this race if there is one in your area. Whether you run the 5k, walk the 5k or walk the mile (sometimes there's a fun run/fun walk of 1 mile :) it is always well sponsored, well run and makes you feel awesome, just for participating. :)
