Bringing Absinthe Back.
Thanks to [info]deliriumdreams for the heads up!

Alameda distiller helps make absinthe legitimate again

Earlier this year, a lone Washington, D.C., lawyer took on the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau in an attempt to lift the ban. After some legal wrangling, the agency agreed - with some limits.

Last week, St. George Spirits of Alameda received the news that, after seven applications, the federal agency had approved its label, the final obstacle before going to market. On Monday, the small artisan distillery sold its token first bottle, becoming the only American company since 1912 to sell absinthe in the United States. Then the staff took a moment to celebrate.

"We made champagne and absinthe cocktails, which rapidly degenerated into just sipping absinthe out of the bottle with crazy straws," said Lance Winters, a 42-year-old master distiller at the seven-employee company.

Brilliant. Now perhaps I can drink it at my own parties without getting that "You're going to wind up slicing off an ear" look from people. ;)

Seriously, the ban is antiquated and ridiculous, as the main culprit behind all of the Absinthe Madness was the fact that most of it was 60 to 75% alcohol (120 to 150 proof). It is not even close to that anymore. Also, it is way more regulated these days, as all alcohol is. So it probably won't make you blind either.

most of it was 60 to 75% alcohol

Well, that and the fact that there was little regulation or enforcement of what went into alcohol, and fairly strong evidence that shady absinthe producers were cutting it with methanol, and some added copper and/or zinc as a colorant. So there's at least three things which can seriously screw you up and cause bizarre behaviors followed by death.

Right! Thanks! I edited about the regulation, and added a couple more links. :)

People went crazy and blind from illegally created whiskey too, I'm certain of it. Maybe they just weren't as high profile as the artists.

If you go and put a crazy-ass amount of wormwood does include thujone, which can act as both a neutrotoxin and something that will get you doobie-smoking high, but it's in such small quantities that I'd be more worried about somebody distilling the stuff in lead-lined copper pipes or dumping a bunch of alcohol in some form or another into it. The fact that lead was all over the place in terms of both distillation and bottling probably had quite a bit to do with the adverse psychoactive effects (ask Nero or Caligula, who very likely suffered from lead poisoning)...

I have figured you for cutting off your own ear for quite some time now, absinthe or not.

LMAO. And the two shall remain separate, lest we have another ban on our hands. ;)
